What is online learning?
Online learning is a convenient, flexible alternative for students to further their education. Courses are conducted according to a schedule, but the place and time students attend may vary. Courses are accessed via the internet including lectures, coursework and discussions. Online learning makes commuting to campus a thing of the past!
Is online learning right for me?
The best way to judge if online learning is for you is to experience an online course. Generally speaking, if you are self-motivated and self-disciplined, have access to a computer and the internet, and feel that high quality education is available outside a traditional classroom then online learning is a viable option for you.

What does it take to be successful in online learning?
To be successful in online learning, you will need to:
- have access to a cable modem or high-speed DSL connection
- check your mail, discussion, and classroom web site daily
- practice/surf, post, reply, and be proactive in your communication with your professor, small group members, and other students in the class
- be committed, disciplined and independent learner
- possess good reading and writing skills to express your thoughts and ideas
A good first exercise is to search the web, discover, and share a guideline or develop a strategy for effective, engaging online discussion. This may include posting facilitation tips, streamlining question and answer techniques, exploring various ways to promote critical thinking and analysis, and trying on different roles in discussion groups. Finally, develop tasks for each group member, and take part in a range of learning activities that can be conducted via on-line discussion.
